The US Grant in downtown San Diego is one of the most historical hotels in the area. built by the son of General Grant in 1910, it has been the overnight stay spot for presidents and many other dignitaries. It is still one of San Diego's most luxurious hotels and a local landmark.
When Veronica and Kimo contacted us about shooting their wedding there, we were excited. We'd done a couple of styled shoots there and some getting ready shoots, but never a full wedding, which we really wanted to do! Even though the weather was uncharacteristically stormy and hot (for San Diego) with everything indoors, we were insulated from everything.
This image is of their reception held below street level in what was, in the '20s, a speakeasy. So what would be more natural than a Gatsby theme? The thick pillars that support an 11 story hotel give it a Paris underground look, too, which is accentuated by the DJ's lighting. Just the sort of venue to get a wedding photographer's blood pumping!
It was shot with a Canon 5D mkIII and our new favorite wide angle zoom, the Tamron 15-30 f2.8 VC. That lens is downright amazing, giving great sharpness and low distortion from edge to edge. The high ISO capability of the 5D3 combines with the speed of the lens and Vibration Control to make life really easy in low light!
