Receptions are fun, they are chaotic, challenging and they are the best place get photos of guests and the couple just being themselves. If the DJ calls everyone out to the dance floor, as this one did, it's a chance to get a wide shot showing the crowd at its most vibrant. There is nothing more fun than a dance floor packed with excitement on the wedding day!
This was shot with my new favorite lens, Tamron 15-30 f2.8 VC on my Canon 5D mkIII. That such a wide lens has vibration control is both unusual and a great thing. It lets me do more things without worrying about holding the camera stock still, so I can hold it overhead, with one hand or any number of other things that would otherwise be difficult. That it is a very sharp lens with very little distortion despite its wide nature is icing on the proverbial cake!
I was bouncing the flash off of the white draping on the inside of the reception tent, so the whole building acted as a sort of monstrous soft box. Pushing the output by a little more than a stop got me light well away from my position without blowing out the people nearest me.
I think this is a great photo of a lot of people having a lot of fun and an example of what can be done with the right equipment.
